My Work

I am a Fellow at Cornell Tech where I direct the Pilot Policy Studio, a program to match local government agencies with STEM academic expertise. Outside of Cornell, I run Eckholm Studio, a data-driven urban strategy consultancy.

Pilot: New York City

Over the past year, in collaboration with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), I led a research team to conduct a comprehensive ethnography of New York’s Urban innovation ecosystem, including 120 stakeholder interviews. The results of my research can be found in the Pilot: New York City action plan.

What is urban innovation?

The adoption of technology aligned with public interest in cities.

How does urban innovation work?

Urban innovation consists of an ecosystem of five actors: government, companies, non-profits, academics, and financiers. In an ideal world, these five actors work together to propel technologies from idea to mass market adoption.

How did you focus your research?

Within urban innovation, Pilot:NYC focused on the subfields of urban mobility, buildings, energy, and digital infrastructure, aligning with New York’s climate goals and anticipated federal spending
